YEG Parents Magazine, we are shining a light on a global movement that is making a profound difference: The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower.
Making the Invisible Visible
Not all disabilities are visible. For many members of our community, living with a non-visible condition such as autism, chronic pain, ADHD, or sensory processing disorders can make navigating public spaces a daunting experience. Without a visual cue, it can be difficult for others to understand that someone might need a little more time, a quieter space, or a bit of extra patience..
This is where the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower comes in. Launched in 2016, the Sunflower is a simple, discreet tool that allows individuals to voluntarily share that they have a hidden disability. By wearing a green lanyard adorned with bright yellow sunflowers, you are letting the general public, retail staff, and transit workers know that you may have specific needs or require additional support.
Why the Sunflower?
As highlighted by the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower organization, the sunflower was chosen because it is a globally recognized symbol that suggests happiness, positivity, and strength. It is distinctive enough to be seen from a distance, yet discreet enough to allow the wearer to maintain their privacy while signaling for support.
Across the globe and increasingly across North America businesses in every sector, are joining the Sunflower network. From major airports and railway systems to retail hubs and healthcare facilities, the goal is simple: to encourage inclusivity, acceptance, and understanding. When a business recognizes the Sunflower, they are committing to providing a more inclusive environment for everyone.
Sunflower Extra: Personalized Support at Your Fingertips
Building on the success of the original lanyard, the program has introduced Sunflower Extra a new, personalized way to communicate your specific needs instantly and privately.
Sunflower Extra uses built-in NFC (Near Field Communication) technology and a unique QR code on a durable card. With a simple tap of a smartphone, the card opens a secure, personalized digital profile. This profile allows the wearer to share extra details about the support they require whether it's needing a quiet space, guidance in a store, or specific assistance during travel without the need for lengthy or repetitive explanations.
Privacy and control remain at the heart of Sunflower Extra. The wearer chooses exactly what information to share and can update or hide their profile at any time. It’s a powerful step forward in providing real-time, tailored support that integrates seamlessly into daily life.
A Tool for Empowerment
For parents in YEG, the Sunflower lanyard can be a game-changer. Whether you are navigating a busy grocery store with a neurodivergent child or attending a large-scale event, the lanyard acts as a silent advocate. It removes the burden of having to constantly explain your child’s needs, allowing your family to move through the world with a greater sense of confidence and security.
The Sunflower isn’t just about "help"; it’s about dignity. It is about creating a society where people with non-visible disabilities feel seen and supported without having to ask.
