Breaking the Parenting Loop

And why trusting support early can change everything for a child’s confidence and learning

Having worked with parents for the past decade, and as a mom of four, I’ve come to realize something about parenting: parents think in loops.

Ever heard someone say, “You’re cycling”? Parents cycle constantly - myself included.

We research, compare, and overthink. With the best intentions, we seek opinions from teachers, doctors, therapists, family members, social media, and even complete strangers on the internet. We wait for the “right” time, look for workarounds, and convince ourselves that maybe things will improve organically.

Meanwhile, our gut already knows.

Deep down we already know our child is struggling - not failing necessarily but struggling. Maybe school has become frustrating. Maybe homework ends in tears, avoidance, or exhaustion. Maybe they’ve started believing they “just aren’t good” at something.

Instead of acting immediately, we loop. Not because we are careless parents, but because we care deeply.

As parents, we put immense pressure on ourselves to make the “right” choices for our children. In today’s world, it’s nearly impossible to avoid comparisons, sizing yourself up against your peers, or carrying the weight of parent-induced guilt.

Am I doing enough? Is it too late to seek support? Am I overreacting?

These are questions I hear every single day.

Six years ago, my husband Greg and I started Tutor Teach with these exact families in mind. We wanted to create a space where parents could stop looping long enough to move forward. A place where support feels approachable, encouraging, and customized to the child sitting in front of us.

Based out of Alberta and serving Canadian families from coast to coast, Tutor Teach supports students in a variety of tailored ways. For some students, support looks like customized 1:1 tutoring. For others, it may be exam prep courses, learning strategy workshops focused on studying, note-taking and organization skills, or programs designed to reignite creativity, curiosity, and confidence.

But learning goes far beyond academics.

Confidence and learning are deeply intertwined, which is why supporting students with learning differences has also become a significant part of our work. With over 60% of our student-base reporting either a diagnosis or suspected diagnosis, we’ve had the privilege of working with incredible minds that simply learn differently.

True inclusivity means creating environments where students and families feel safe to be exactly who they are. At Tutor Teach, we welcome different learning styles, personalities, skills, and backgrounds because that sense of belonging matters so much.

And now, let’s loop back.

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear from parents is around year-round learning, especially summer support. There is this fear that tutoring over the summer somehow takes away from childhood.

It doesn’t.

Children engaged in learning throughout the summer are still swimming, biking, camping, travelling, sleeping in, and being kids. What they’re also doing is maintaining confidence, reinforcing skills, reducing school-year anxiety, and entering September feeling capable.

Success goes beyond grades and awards. Success can mean raising your hand in class or feeling less frustration during homework. It can mean a child finally believes they can learn.

That is the dream.

So, if you’ve been waiting for your child to suddenly have that proverbial “aha moment,” perhaps this is your reminder that you don’t have to wait for things to get worse before seeking support.

The best thing we can do as parents is trust our intuition sooner.

Parenting and learning are not meant to happen in isolation. If your family is looking for support, guidance, or a starting point, the Tutor Teach team is eager to connect.
